ROOTS BOXING ACADEMY:
INTRODUCTION TO BOXING
(6-WEEK COURSE)

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course is designed to give students a thorough understanding of boxing fundamentals. During this course, you will learn all of the necessary techniques and tools needed to jump start your boxing journey. You will also get to apply these techniques during each class, making your training a fulfilling experience.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

As a result of this course you will learn:

  • Fundamentals of boxing 

  • Proper form and technique

  • Wrapping your hands for safety

  • Throwing basic & combination punches

  • Developing skills on the heavy bag / double-end bag / speed bag

  • Footwork, balance, mobility and rhythm 

  • Breathing and breath control

  • Offensive and defensive movements 

  • [Optional] Applying fundamentals in controlled sparring sessions

 

SYLLABUS

 

 

 

 

Week
Lesson Plan
Week 0
  • Focus: ~45-min small group orientation to introduce boxing fundamentals and prepare you for the six week course

  • Techniques: Introduction to calisthenics (body weight exercises), stance, footwork, and punches

Weeks 1-2
  • Focus: Fundamental punches (jab, cross, hook), proper stance, footwork, mobility, and breathing

  • Techniques: Foundation (stance, foot placement, balance, mobility, rhythm); Striking (hand wrapping, making a fist, striking)

Weeks 3-4
  • Focus: Applying fundamentals on the heavy bag; varying punching power; understanding balance and navigating the heavy bag

  • Techniques: Defense (upper body blocks, catches, parries); Head Movement (slips and ducks)

Weeks 5-6
  • Focus: Putting it all together while sharpening skill sets and increasing the overall intensity; developing rhythm and timing

  • Techniques: Defense (lower body blocks, arm placement); Partner Drills (catching / blocking punches, delivering, receiving)

The general format of this course includes 3 mandatory classes each week:​

  • Technique: 1x per week 1.5-hour  

  • Boxing: 1x per week 1-hour

  • Fitness boxing: 1x per week 45-min

  • [Optional] Sparring: 1x / week (completely optional; signup required)

Q: HOW MUCH IS THE TUITION?

A: $600.

Q: WHAT ARE THE FREE GIFTS?

A: You will receive free hand wraps, training gloves, and drawstring bag to help you geared up for training. You will also get one free group class of your choice each week. See Group Classes.

Q: WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PREPARE FOR THE COURSE?

A: You will attend a mandatory small group orientation (~45 min) in week 0 to help you prepare for the 6-week course. Feel free to check out our blog post "5 Essential Tips for Your First Boxing Training Session ".

Q: WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION?

A: While we would love to see you at every class, we understand that life happens. You are allowed to miss up to 3 classes (excl. orientation) in order to graduate. 

​Q: ARE THERE MORE COURSES AFTER "INTRODUCTION TO BOXING?"

A: After you graduate from our Introduction to Boxing course, you have a few options to continue practicing the sport. 1) private training (hourly); 2) 4-6 people small group training (please ask your coach to put you on the wait list if you are interested; training will start once we have enough sign ups); 3) monthly class membership (check out our Class Plans).

Q: DO I GET A DISCOUNT IF I SIGN UP FOR A MEMBERSHIP?

A: Yes! To reward your commitment, we will waive your one-time membership activation fee ($149 value) if you decide to sign up for a monthly membership.
